Rug Rat Wednesday

Introducing Rug Rat Wednesday

As a now stay at home mom I am in new uncharted territory... filling my toddler's days with fun... cheap fun activities that won't break the bank.  I have found many awesome activities in my Pinterest raids and online checks.  I am going to take Rug Rat Wednesday's to share these with  you. I am even going to let my little man rate them on a scale to let you know how much/how long/how awesome the project/activity is.

This Wednesday I am going to share with you a cheap activity that I found, that my toddler will ask for by name... or rather this "Mommy I want to play in the cream." Cream I say... oh the shaving cream??  Now this is a tad messy but cheap... and he loves it!

As you can tell he love the shaving cream activity.

Supplies Needed:
Shaving Cream (we use the cheap Barbasol kind, not the gel kind)
Food coloring
I bought a cheap throw away tin cooking pan to use that way I can just throw it away when he's done. You could probably use a bowl or something else if you would like to clean and re-use.
Toys to hide in the cream

This is a sensory play activity. He loves to dig for the toys that I have hidden in the cream, plus mixing the colors together to make it look really disgusting.

Rug Rat Fun Rating
1 (being horrible eck) to 10 (being awesome... let's play again)

Yummy Baked Chicken

The other night I had chicken that needed cooked... and I was on the hunt for something easy to make that wouldn't require me to go to the store for ingredients. Plus I like baking chicken rather than pan frying... it's just less messy and easier on me. I can throw it in the oven and ignore it until the timer goes off. Simple and easy and I'm in love. Especially with the toddler running around.

I always go to Pinterest first off for any recipe, it's just so easy (yet again easy is the name of the game here at the Bunn house). I found this awesome recipe and I had all the ingredients and it took no time. What actually surprised me was the husband and toddler loved it. Can I get a what what? Momma did good, and I am by no means a cook. This meal was thrown together in split seconds before 5 o'clock too.

So it's going in the recipe box to hold onto for another day. Check it out... it's yummy!  You can follow me on Pinterest to see all my yummy recipes and awesome things I have pinned.

Toddler Temper Tantrums

Boy oh boy! You think there are days when your kids are the worst. Then you have a day like mine. Or rather the past hour like mine. Toddler temper tantrums are an amazing thing. I guess they just bottle up all their frustrations from every day and then let it explode in a whole temper tantrum. I really don't understand how they don't just wear out after? The energy of a toddler needs to be bottled up and sold... I mean seriously! Can someone invent this please?

The best toy invention ever!!

You know when you go to the toy store and are trying to find that one toy that your child will actually play with time and time again? It's like picking out a car... Seriously... The toys you think your child will just die over... They play with it for thirty minutes and then never touch it again. Even after begging for them to play with it. So frustrating as a parent!

If you are at a loss for what to buy your toddler especially boys.... Check this awesome toy out!! We have had this, what my son calls his "pirate ship," for the last two summers. He still loves it and even though it makes a mess... It's just water... Nothing like paint or sand.  I love it!!! It also keeps him cool on hot days... And I don't have to actually be in the pool with him. Makes one for happy momma and toddler! Win win!

Great post about those sneaky calories

This is an awesome blog post by Skinny mom on how those pesky calories are making us gain weight. When you sit down and realize how many calories you eat just from condiments... It's crazy! I've always advised patients at my old clinic of this!  Those pesky little buggers can sneak up on ya!

Another awesome toddler product

The other morning while cleaning my son's bed since he literally soaked through diaper, sheets, mattress cover, and down to the mattress with urine... I began to think man how much I love those bed pads... you know those Huggies Goodnites Disposable Bed Pads.    These things are life savers... if you have a potty training toddler or frequent bed wetter..er soaker. Then these are a must!!  If only I would have had the pad in the right spot then I wouldn't have had to clean all of that so early in the morning.

They may have been invented for older children that have bed wetting incidents. We have definitely gotten our money out of the ones that we have bought.  For example not only are they good for bed wetting or accidents with my potty training toddler, but they are also helpful when we have a stomach bug.  During these last eight months (I remember because of course I was pregnant... and I catch everything!) he has had a stomach bug twice, and these things keep the vomit from soaking through to the mattress pad. Now granted during those specific times of crisis, we lay out at least two pads to cover the vomit radius.  But I would rather pay for these, then to have to clean sheets, mattress cover, mattress all at one am in the morning during the severe sickness of a stomach bug... you know the kind... where your child is vomiting every 30 minutes for at least two hours. UGH!!! This saved this prego momma some time and I at least had some rest in between.

If you haven't seen them or used them check them out... they are a must with any children in the house. Even if you keep them on stock for those stomach bug or flu sicknesses that make their way around the family.

On another random note... since I usually utilize these in the urine prone areas of my toddlers bed... but this fateful time I didn't have it in the correct position. Then I had to figure out how to get urine out of a mattress. His mattress is also a pillow top mattress, so there is no cleaning it and flipping the mattress if it didn't help get the urine smell out. So online I go to research at 8 AM...  This tip I found actually worked. There was no urine smell or vinegar smell (even with my pregnant lady nose), so ladies... store this away if you ever need it again.

The Best Ever Crock Pot Tortilla Soup

Oh.... my.... goodness.... I have stumbled upon the best Crock Pot Tortilla Soup recipe I have ever tasted. Let me tell you my family and I can eat this at least once a week... and the leftovers usually get eaten as well. My husband doesn't even particularly like soups... but he loves this one. Plus this recipe is so easy to make and is easy for working momma's.  For the life of me I cannot find where I got this recipe .. I guess one of my random nights of looking up fast and easy recipes for my little family.

Crock Pot Tortilla Soup

Ingredients:
3 cups of chicken broth
1 1/2 cups cooked chicken (I use three or four cooked chicken breasts)
1/2 onion
1 cup frozen corn
2 green onions
28 oz can of tomatoes and juice
1 cup chopped up veggies that you have on hand (optional, I buy a can of black beans and rinse and drain)
4 cloves garlic
1/4 tsp crushed red pepper flakes
1/2 tsp cayenne pepper
1 tsp cumin
salt to taste

Directions:
Dump everything (even if frozen) into crock pot and cook on low for 8-10 hours or high for 6 hours. 30 minutes prior to serving, take out chicken breasts (if this is what you have used) and shred, replace back in crock pot and let cook for another 30 minutes. Then ready to serve.

Some of the best baby/mom products ever

In my efforts to clean my entire house all in one day at 33 weeks pregnant, I almost neglected my blog for the day. I know that if I miss one... I will miss more, so I mustn't start this early.  So onward we go...

For all the new mom's out there or newly pregnant women. There are so many different products and things people say you just have to have. Reviewing what I had for my first one versus what I have now, I am hoping that I have some knowledge on the matter... since I've been there done that. There are so many new products out there even in the last three years... it really amazes me. Some of them make me wish I would have had them the first time around. Yet at the same time, I wasted so much money with my first son buying things that he either did not like or it did not help (even though it may have sounded good at the time). For example: our son got his first two bottom teeth at three months old. We thought he was cranky and fussy because he had colic, so many studies and trips to the doctor later.... surprise he was just teething.  I bought products and things to help teething, but he would rather chew on a wet rag.  I am hoping that with this little girl maybe she will get some use out of all those gadgets I purchased.

Below are some things that make my pregnancy life easier, and some things that help either with my toddler or I already swear by for newborns. Life really is easier when you have some of these things, and let's face it the more help you get and the more rest you get... the better things are all the way around... for everyone.

Leachco Snoogle Total Body PIllow ~ This pillow has been a life saver with both of my pregnancies. Even though it is like another body in the bed, this pillow helps me get the most sleep. We all need sleep before babies arrive am I right? It has over 1,000 reviews on amazon.com alone, and is priced around $45.  If your planning on becoming pregnant or are already, I seriously suggest purchasing this lovely pillow. Trust me if you haven't had kids.... get the rest while you can!!!

Fisher Price Rock 'N Play Sleeper  ~ Now granted I have not actually tried this product yet, but I have had many friends and people that I have met that have used this and swear by it. So I have mine purchased and already ready to go for little miss when she get's here.  My son had bad acid reflux, he was on medication for the whole first year. Nothing and I mean nothing we tried besides medication helped my poor little fella. This probably would have been a life saver had they made this three years ago. My friends son also had bad acid reflux, plus he was about a month premature.  They tried various things, she even tried formula to see if it would help his gassy/fussy/colicky symptoms. Nothing really helped, besides when the doctors put him on acid reflux medication, but once she started using this rock and play sleeper, she started getting more and more sleep at night. I'm sure the incline on this helps babies with acid reflux, as well as when they move it causes it to rock to help them get back to sleep. I am hoping this will be a wonder miracle cure for the no sleep we are expecting this time around.

Sleep Sheep  ~ We have used this with our son, and still use it every night and he is almost three. He loves his "sheepy." Basically it is a sound machine, but I love the fact that you can chose how long it stays on. We usually play it for the first 45 minutes of nap and bed time. He is used to having it, but can go to sleep without it. So in the middle of the night I do not have to go to his room and turn it on, but it helps him in knowing this is bedtime. We also have on for little miss when she get's here as well. I have recommended this product to my friends as well, and their babies/toddlers seem to like it as well. Who likes a completely quiet room when you are trying to go to sleep??

Miracle Swaddling Blanket  ~ I SWEAR by this blanket. Now granted some children do not "like" to be swaddled. This was the only way my son would sleep. The fact that he was Houdini and could get out of any swaddle blanket no matter how tightly (safely) wrapped he was, just prompted momma to find the best swaddle blanket out on the market. This miracle blanket looks almost like a straight jacket, and in fact it is in some factors. When we started using this blanket, he couldn't get out and couldn't scratch himself... and so we finally got some well needed rest.  I think it is well worth the cost of almost 35 dollars. I was never able to find it at a regular store like Target or Walmart, but they have them online and I was able to find a really cute one for about $15 at one particular Rhea Lana's sale that I went to. So we are well stocked for this next baby... this time this momma is prepared to work out all the kinks so that we can get some sleep around here. I mean who has time to be tired when they have a three year old to entertain and take care of all day??

Starting my Coupon Stockpile

Now granted I'm no extreme couponer... nor will I ever be. I am happy with saving any money at all on things that we use. I definitely have no room to store all those goodies... darn the luck. Today was my first time shopping at Target, you know besides the "Oh that's cute, I must buy it" Target trips... which are now and forever gone since we are now a one income family. I was very proud of myself, I went in with my list, my coupons, and my bar code to scan from the awesome Target Cartwheel website. I came out with exactly what was on my list and nothing else... even though those clearance end caps were so dang inviting... I resisted. Go me!!! Here is my loot that I came home with:

Granted this is only 13 items... but I am seriously stoked at how well it went. Though I didn't actually get any "free" items... I still saved some. Every penny saved is a penny earned.

I bought all these items for $52.71. Not bad... could be better. But this is only my first time... this price will improve. I'm sure of it. :-)

I love wreaths!!!

I love wreaths... Any kind of wreath. Whether it's wreaths for Christmas, fall, football season... Whatever I love them. I love decorating for each season especially fall and spring. The newest wreath I've made is a wreath made out of burlap... And I adore it... Though its not very summer looking.

Chevron and burlap... What could be better?

A winter wreath

My Christmas wreath

This wreath is on my to make list. A lemon wreath... Something about the yellow and greens just look so happy...
And welcoming.

Mommy Bedtime Blues

Well... I'm back again. :-)  This time for realz. I have recently "quit" my job as a nurse, and am now staying at home full time. So my days are full of cleaning, laundry, cooking... and looking at the walls. A girl can only do that for so long right?? My little dude is almost three (planning the big three year old birthday party as we speak... or I type and you read), and is still a handful. We are currently regressing in our night time routine... which of course is awesome considering his baby sister will be here any day. 33 weeks and counting... cannot wait to meet this little bugger. We are hoping to nip these night time fits in the bud, but this child is good at stalling the bed time. Who makes them so smart? How is this possible that this little mini me doesn't understand I mean business when I say get your rear in bed dude!!!?

I have read many parenting books as well as mommy blogs about children stalling... and the ways to "cure" it. But this is not easy guys! They are smart! Our son has NEVER slept with us, and that will never change. He has had the same bed time routine for his whole life.... bath, PJ's, two books, and bed. Used to never be an issue.... but not now. So tonight we try something new. As I lay awake last night debating on how am I going to fix this prior to baby sister's arrival... I began my internet search. Ahhh haaa... it says start this bed time routine or calming down period at least an hour prior to bed time. Alright... now that is not always feasible. But I must say it is worth a try. So tonight we will try the calm down method prior to bath and see if this will regress this "stalling" at bed time. Wish me luck guys!! Then if we "cure" this I am sure we will be on to something else bigger and badder. :-)

My little man... growing up fast, and wants to play T-Ball already.

Time sure does fly by... before we know it he will be in kindergarten and his baby sister will be here and growing faster than her momma wants her to. Until then now that I'm a full time mommy and wife, I am going to make the most of this time. In the meantime maybe I can grow myself as well as helping my family grow. Time for some new adventures!
